Understanding Aphasia

June is Aphasia Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing understanding of aphasia and the challenges faced by millions of individuals living with communication disabilities.

Aphasia is a language disorder that affects a person's ability to speak, understand spoken language, read, and write. It is most commonly caused by a stroke but can also result from traumatic brain injury, brain tumors, or other neurological conditions. Importantly, aphasia affects communication—not intelligence. Individuals with aphasia continue to have thoughts, ideas, and opinions but may experience difficulty expressing them or understanding others.

The Importance of Communication Access

Effective communication is essential for education, employment, healthcare, social interaction, and independent living. When communication barriers exist, individuals with aphasia may experience frustration, isolation, and reduced participation in activities they enjoy.

Advancements in assistive technology are helping bridge these gaps by providing alternative methods of communication that empower individuals to express themselves and engage more fully in everyday life.

How The Next Step, Inc. and EyeTech Support Individuals with Aphasia

Through its partnerships with EyeTech Digital Systems©, state programs, and local organizations, The Next Step, Inc. (TNSI) helps connect eligible individuals with innovative communication solutions designed to support those with speech and language impairments, including aphasia.

For individuals who have limited mobility in addition to communication challenges, EyeTech's advanced eye-gaze technology can allow users to communicate using eye movement, creating opportunities for meaningful interaction and self-expression.

Communication Technology Creates Opportunities

Every person's experience with aphasia is unique, and communication needs vary from individual to individual. Assistive communication devices can be customized to support specific goals, whether that involves expressing basic needs, participating in classroom discussions, communicating at work, or reconnecting with loved ones.

By providing access to communication technology, TNSI and EyeTech help individuals regain confidence, strengthen relationships, and participate more fully in the activities that matter most.

Raising Awareness and Promoting Inclusion

Aphasia Awareness Month serves as a reminder that communication accessibility benefits everyone. Communities, healthcare providers, educators, employers, and family members all play an important role in creating inclusive environments where individuals with aphasia can communicate effectively and participate fully.

At The Next Step, Inc., we are committed to helping individuals access the assistive technology solutions they need to communicate, connect, and thrive.
